"Hacker Proof" Ubuntu

At the recent CanSecWest, sponsors of the conference offered up three laptops to attendees on one condition, if you hacked it you could have it. Over the next three days hackers made their attempts to break in and take control of the laptops. There was a MacBook Air running OSX, a Fujitsu running Windows Vista and a Sony Vaio running Ubuntu.

The first laptop to fall was the MacBook Air which was cracked in just 2 minutes exploiting a flaw in the Safari Web Browser. The hacker that crack the MacBook Air won the computer and a $10,000 cash prize.

Next to fall was the Fujitsu running Windows Vista. Under the relaxed rules allowing contestants to use any commonly found software already loaded on the laptop, the Vista machine fell through a previously unknown flaw in the Adobe Flash software. The hacker who discovered this flaw won the Fujitsu computer he cracked and a $5,000 cash prize.

The truly real winner at the conference was the Sony Vaio running Ubuntu. No one was able to crack this machine and take control of it, thus giving Ubuntu bragging rights as being "Hacker Proof".
